Custom Shopify app

The app your store needs, built instead of searched for.

Custom Shopify app development means building the private or public app your store needs when the app store does not have it: subscription models, fulfillment logic, ERP connections, checkout extensions, admin tooling. Built primarily on Gadget.dev, deployed in your own accounts so you own it, with an optional Application Care Plan from $99 a month to keep it running after launch.

Also covers App the app store doesn't have

  • Fixed bid from a written spec
  • Gadget.dev built primarily on
  • Your own accounts deployed and billed to you
  • $99 a month optional Care Plan, per app

Who this is for

  • You are running four apps to do what one custom app should do.
  • The app store has something close, but not close enough.
  • You need a private app that talks to your ERP, warehouse, or internal system.
  • You have a subscription, membership, or fulfillment model that off-the-shelf apps do not handle.

What you get

  1. Custom private or public Shopify app on Gadget.dev, or a stack that fits.
  2. Shopify metaobjects, Functions, checkout extensions, and admin UI as needed.
  3. Hosting and deployment in your own accounts, billed directly to you.
  4. Optional Application Care Plan after launch.

Selected work

  • A nonprofit farm-share program Custom subscription and adoption app on Gadget.dev, built on Shopify metaobjects and Shopify Subscriptions.
  • A Shopify app developer Billing migration off a sunsetting third-party billing provider.

My take

Build when the workflow is core to how you make money, or when you are paying for three apps to get one workflow. Buy when the app store has something that does the job well and you can live with its edges. The mistake I see most is the middle path: a bought app bent into shape with workarounds until nobody remembers how it was supposed to work.

How it works

Scope call and written spec

What the app does, what it talks to, and what it must not do.

Fixed-price proposal

One number, one delivery date.

Build on a dev store

Reviewed with you at milestones, not at the end.

Launch and handoff

Installed on your store, documented, with a Care Plan if you want one.

The math

I've run an eight-person agency, held leadership in a hundred-person one, and been CTO of a third. I know where agency budgets go: overhead, junior hours, handoffs.

AI changed that math. The person who scopes the work is the person who builds it, and there is nobody in between.

Questions

How much does a custom Shopify app cost?

It depends on what it does and what it connects to, so every app is priced from a written spec. A private app that automates one workflow is a short project. An app with billing, an external integration, and an admin interface is a longer one. The proposal gives you the number before anything is built.

Do I own the app?

Yes. It is deployed in accounts you own, the code is yours, and the hosting bills go to you. If we part ways, nothing stops working.

What is Gadget.dev and why build on it?

Gadget is a hosted platform for Shopify apps. It handles the parts every app needs, like Shopify authentication, webhooks, and data sync, so the build time goes into what your app actually does. It also means another developer can pick the app up later without learning a custom stack.

What happens if something breaks after launch?

Every app ships with documentation and a handoff. The Application Care Plan, from $99 a month, covers monitoring, Shopify API version updates, and fixes for anything that breaks. Without it, fixes are scoped and priced as they come up.
