Shopify Plus guidance

Shopify Plus replatforms, from first audit to launch day.

Shopify Plus consulting is hands-on replatforming, integration, and platform architecture for merchants on Plus or moving to it. I have worked on Shopify Plus since 2016, including the builds behind Rebecca Minkoff, Kylie Cosmetics, and MVMT Watches. Engagements run as a fixed-scope project starting at $3.5K or an ongoing retainer from $500 a month.

  • Since 2016 on Shopify Plus
  • $3.5K projects, starting at
  • $500 a month retainers, from
  • 2 to 6 weeks scoped engagement

Who this is for

  • You are on Plus and your agency treats every question like a change order.
  • You are evaluating a move to Plus and want a straight answer on whether it is worth it.
  • You are a high-traffic or flash-sale brand and need infrastructure that holds up on launch day.
  • You need someone to own the technical decisions on a project, not just the tickets.

What you get

  1. Shopify Plus replatforms and storefront builds.
  2. LLM-powered automation and features wired into your commerce stack, from prototype to production.
  3. Headless architecture and integrations built to scale.
  4. Build-vs-buy calls, vendor selection, and replatform roadmaps.

Selected work

Rebecca Minkoff

Replatform

A commerce experience that still holds up years after launch.

Situation
Luxury fashion brand outgrowing Magento.
What I built
Replatformed to Shopify Plus with a new storefront and a clean migration.

Kylie Cosmetics

High-traffic launch

Held up under 100K concurrent users in the first minutes of a drop.

Situation
Celebrity beauty brand with viral, flash-sale product drops.
What I built
Built the commerce infrastructure to absorb launch-day demand without falling over.

MVMT Watches

DTC scale

They sold 1.5 million watches without a single store.

Situation
Influencer-first watch brand with no retail footprint.
What I built
Engineered the commerce platform behind their direct-to-consumer growth.

My take

Most Plus merchants do not need more developers. They need one person who will say no to the fourth app that does what the second one already does, and who will still be around to answer for that decision a year later. The Plus stores I have seen age well had someone who owned the technical decisions, not just the tickets.

How it works

Discovery call

30 min

You tell me what's broken or what you want to build. I tell you if I can help.

Scoped engagement

2 to 6 weeks

Fixed scope. Fixed timeline. No open-ended retainers.

Delivered and documented

yours to keep

Working systems and full documentation, so your team can maintain it.

The math

I've run an eight-person agency, held leadership in a hundred-person one, and been CTO of a third. I know where agency budgets go: overhead, junior hours, handoffs.

AI changed that math. The person who scopes the work is the person who builds it, and there is nobody in between.

Questions

Do I need Shopify Plus, or is regular Shopify enough?

Plus earns its fee when you need checkout customization, Shopify Functions, B2B, expansion stores, or the higher API limits that come with real volume. If none of those apply yet, regular Shopify is usually enough, and moving up later is straightforward. I will tell you which side of that line you are on during the discovery call.

What counts as a scoped engagement versus a retainer?

A scoped engagement is one piece of work with a written scope, a fixed price, and a delivery date, usually two to six weeks. A retainer is ongoing: a set amount of advisory and build time each month, from $500, for merchants who want someone on call. Most people start with a project and add a retainer once the first thing has shipped.

Can you work alongside my existing agency?

Yes. I often come in as the technical owner on one project while an agency keeps running design, marketing, or day-to-day theme work. It works when the boundaries are written down up front, so I ask for that before we start.

How do you handle a launch-day traffic spike like Kylie Cosmetics?

By planning for it before launch, not during it. That means keeping the storefront light, moving anything slow out of the request path, load testing at a realistic order of magnitude, and having a rollback ready. Shopify's checkout absorbs the transaction load. The work is making sure everything added to the store stays out of its way.
